Months of the Year in French

The French months are close to their English names, and none of them takes a capital letter. The seasons are the part worth reading twice.

In January, in spring, and writing a date

For a month, use en: en janvier. Au mois de janvier also works and sounds slightly more formal.

Three seasons take en: en été, en automne, en hiver. Spring is the exception and takes au: au printemps.

A date is le, the number, then the month, with nothing in between: le 3 mai. The first of the month is the only ordinal: le 1er mai.

Written dates run day first, so 3/5/2026 is the third of May.

  • Mon anniversaire est en avril. My birthday is in April.
  • On se voit le 15 juin.See you on the 15th of June.
