Four in everyday use: please, you are welcome, here you go when handing something over, and sorry, what? when you did not hear. Tone and situation carry the difference, which is why it is worth drilling rather than translating.
Entschuldigung or Es tut mir leid?
Entschuldigung is the small one: excuse me, sorry for bumping into you, sorry to interrupt. Es tut mir leid is a real apology and is what you say when something actually went wrong.
What do I say when someone sneezes?
Gesundheit, literally health. It is said far more consistently in Germany than bless you is in English, including between strangers on a train.
