Questions
What is the ka at the end of a phrase?
The question marker. Japanese does not need to reorder a sentence to ask something; adding ka to the end does it. Ikura desu ka is how much is it, and dropping the ka leaves a statement.
Wakarimasen or shirimasen?
Wakarimasen is I do not understand, and it is the one to reach for mid-conversation. Shirimasen is I do not know the fact you are asking about. Both are in this set, and using the second where you meant the first can sound curt.
