Do I need to read kana first?
No. Every entry carries its reading and its romaji, so you can play from day one and let the script become familiar as you go. Nothing here asks you to type Japanese.
Why do the Japanese sets have five games rather than seven?
Grid Hack and The Vault are letter games: one hides words in a grid of letters, the other asks you to spell them. Neither works on a writing system that is not alphabetic, so the Japanese sets run the five games that do.
Which set should I start with?
Question words at nine entries, or colours at twelve. Days of the week is worth playing early too, since the seven kanji in it are among the first anyone learns.
