Portuguese days of the week game

Portuguese is the outlier here: it numbers its weekdays rather than naming them. Monday is segunda-feira, the second, and only sábado and domingo escaped the count. Thirteen words in all, with hoje, amanhã, ontem and depois de amanhã.

Thirteen words and all seven games run on them. Grid Hack is a good opener, though be ready for the hyphens: segunda-feira is one entry, not two.

Questions

Why does Monday mean second?

Because Sunday is counted first. The Church renamed the days after the pagan gods were dropped, and only Portuguese kept the numbering: segunda, terça, quarta, quinta, sexta. The system survived nowhere else in Europe.

Do I have to say the whole segunda-feira?

In writing, yes. In speech Brazilians usually drop the feira and just say segunda or terça, and everyone understands. The set teaches the full written form, which is what you will see on an opening-hours sign.
