Questions

Why is one o'clock é and two o'clock são?

Portuguese agrees the verb with the number of hours. One hour takes the singular é, two or more take the plural são. Meio-dia and meia-noite are singular too, since each is one thing.

What is da manhã for?

Marking the half of the day, the way a.m. does. Oito da manhã is eight in the morning; oito da noite is eight in the evening. Brazilians use it far more often than the 24-hour clock in speech.
