French family game
Nineteen relatives, each carried with its article, because le and la are part of the word rather than decoration. The pairs make it easier: le cousin and la cousine differ by one letter, as do le fils and la fille.

Questions
Why does every word have le or la in front of it?
Because the article is the gender, and the gender is not guessable. Learning la mère rather than mère means you never have to go back and learn it twice.
Does la femme mean woman or wife?
Both, and context decides. Ma femme is my wife; une femme is a woman. Le mari only ever means husband.
